And so another extreme, fun-filled, tiring, thrilling day we had for today’s field trip, but this time we were with the Japanese delegates.

1

Everyone seems so excited because the destination was in Merapi Museum, Merapi Lava tour and Salak Farm. After the short orientation, everyone hopped in the bus for a 30 minute ride I guess.

The tour guide showed and explained to us the history of the Merapi volcano, the huge maps on the wall, the stages of the volcanic eruption, photos of volcanic eruption around the world, including Mt. Pinatubo from the Philippines, pyroclastic materials from different times.

Me and my hubby (Norch Van) – Volcanic eruption simulation

Included in this tour is a short film; among 127 active volcanoes, Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia, located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, whereas thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano. It has erupted regularly; in 1994, 2006 before the earthquake. On 25 October 2010 the Indonesian government raised the alert for Mount Merapi to its highest level and warned villagers to move and evacuate to safer ground. It was also mentioned that the stakeholders are doing mitigation actions to increase the preparedness by using spatial planning. Mitigation efforts were also done by the locals of the area.

After the film viewing, we headed to the exit for our next activity which is the Lava tour.

After the crazy ride, we head back to the museum for lunch and to freshen up. Then we continue the trip to the Salak Farm where we get to eat Salak, and to the fish ponds – it still has the ashes from the volcanic eruption though. We had a small orientation before we head back to the hotel. It was a long day indeed, but its fun and thrill seeking.
